If the insurance benefit is $5,000 or more, CIGNA will automatically open a free, interest-bearing account in the participant's name or his or her beneficiary's name. This account, called the CIGNA Assurance, is a safe and secure place to keep the proceeds while the beneficiary decides how best to use them. A personal checkbook will be mailed to the beneficiary once the claim has been approved. To use the money in the account, the beneficiary simply writes a check for $250 or more. Any amount that remains in the account will continue to earn interest at competitive rates.

If the life insurance benefit is less than $5,000, CIGNA will send the participant or his or her beneficiary a check for the total benefit amount.
