This week’s #innovidual is Senior Scientist Beverly Thompson.
Tell us a little about your job role and responsibilities, and/or something you’re currently working on
“I am a Senior Scientist providing imaging science and advanced data analytics support in the areas of collection and exploitation of various types of geospatial and remote sensed data.”
Why is innovation important in your role?
“The process of innovation transforms a new idea into a tangible solution. Our ability to innovate keeps us relevant and competitive, ensuring that we deliver solutions with long term value to our customers.
“For me, innovation is also about re-visualizing and transferring prior knowledge into new domains. For example, at Leidos, I have worked in multidiscipline collaborative teams to transfer knowledge from traditional ISR [Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance] applications into innovative solutions that advanced biomedical imaging and cancer research.”
What’s your definition of innovation? What does innovation mean to you?
“Innovation is not merely an end-goal (a new product, solution, or methodology) but a process; it opens the door to new ways of perceiving a problem and is the conduit to developing creative solutions. The process of innovation can be exciting and transforming, either individually or collectively within a team. The process can be a bit disorderly as well, weighing certainty against risk, pushing us out of comfort zones and into a new way of thinking.”
What does innovation look like?
“Innovation is critical for societal transformations to occur. As an advocate for STEM education through the empowerment of girls, I am interested in innovative ways to increase their access to science and technology. From a social responsibility perspective, I have been involved in several efforts to empower young African women to become impactful leaders through experiential STEM education, mentorship, and leadership training.
“For example, CareerGirls.org (CG), a video-based career exploration platform with a STEM focus, is working with a group of educators and technologists to deploy mobile learning center solutions in limited or no-internet access rural communities to teach computer science and empowerment lessons to girls in Africa. In this setting, innovation is the pathway to building critical human capital. This technological innovation is a conduit for girls to explore their creativity, providing access to skills training and mentorship that supports future entrepreneurship and economic stability that will benefit Africa. I am a CG board member and technology contributor to the mobile learning center concept.”
