Stories of survival for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Leidos Women's Network Employee Resource Group has created a special pink logo. The Women's Network is also donating $2,500 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation this month. In addition, we'll be honoring and remembering our colleagues and their loved ones all October, and sharing some of their stories.
Laurie is a Transition Program Manager for the FAA Flight Services contract that Leidos supports. She is based out of Ashburn, Va.
"We cannot do enough to raise awareness for the importance of regular preventative exams, both men and women.
"I was faithful about mammograms but without any symptoms, I had developed a tumor and was in Stage 2 within a year of my last mammogram. Had I even slightly delayed my preventative exam, my path to being cancer-free would have been different.
"I am now cancer-free for six years and will pay any cost for my own health. I'm an advocate for my friends and family to stay current with their preventative exams. I make sure I'm always available for support or able to listen and be there for anyone going through a similar experience."
Linda is a Senior HR Specialist for Onboarding Services. She is based out of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
"A monthly self-check saved my life.
"Six months after a clear mammogram, I noticed something was wrong. I went to my doctor at the first available appointment and within one month, I had my first surgery and began treatment.
"Check yourself monthly! Don't wait! Don't let fear stop you from seeing a doctor. If I hadn't acted quickly, I don't believe I'd be here today. I'm a 3-plus year survivor!
"After treatment, recovery, and closure of the company my husband worked for, we decided to change our plan of leaving Michigan to retire in Tennessee and move 'NOW.' The rest of his family had already moved here, so why wait? Life’s too short and uncertain.
"We relocated to Knoxville in June of 2018 and I started at Leidos in August. I feel so very blessed to be alive, near family, and to work for a company that values ethics, integrity, and that supports awareness for issues such as breast cancer."
