Resilience in a Cloud-Connected World: The Future of Cybersecurity

In an op-ed for the Fall 2025 issue of U.S. Cybersecurity Magazine, Josh Salmanson explores how organizations across industries are grappling with increasingly sophisticated threats, from AI-driven attacks to ransomware and supply chain vulnerabilities. Salmanson, VP for the Leidos Defensive Cyber Practice, examines how cloud computing and AI-powered solutions are reshaping the way we approach resilience and operational continuity.

Cloud computing has long been seen as a tool for efficiency, and its role in strengthening cybersecurity is equally compelling. By securely transitioning systems once managed on-premises into the cloud, organizations can unlock new levels of resilience, scalability, and security. For example, cloud-based solutions can support real-time monitoring and large-scale threat detection that on-premises environments struggle to match. Leidos’ AI-powered tools, hosted in the cloud, analyze vast amounts of data to assist in identifying anomalies, detecting potential breaches and responding to threats. This proactive posture helps close vulnerabilities before they can be exploited, reducing the risk of costly downtime and mission disruption.

And when disruption does occur, the cloud provides built-in resilience. With advanced backup, replication, and failover capabilities, organizations can restore operations quickly and minimize downtime—a mission-critical advantage for sectors such as defense, critical infrastructure, and healthcare.

Technology alone doesn’t deliver resilience. True cybersecurity strength comes from a culture of awareness and accountability. Building resilience requires strong leadership and a culture of cybersecurity awareness that permeates every level of the organization. Cybersecurity leaders must work with organizational leadership to weave security practices into the fabric of daily operations. Employees need to understand the “what” and the “why” of cybersecurity policies. When individuals feel personally invested in protecting their organization, they are more likely to follow best practices, report suspicious activity and avoid risky behaviors.
