Spaceflight Health and Performance Services

Supporting astronaut safety and long-duration mission success through integrated biomedical science

For over 50 years, Leidos has supported astronauts, spaceflight, and space science, helping to address known and unknown challenges, evaluating countermeasures to known human space flight risks, and identifying and investigating new risks.

Leidos collaborates with NASA to advance astronaut health in areas ranging from pre-flight crew training, hardware development and payload integration all the way through detailed post-flight activities including data collection, sample/data dissemination and research data archival.

Program Components:
  • Space Food Production and Research – Producing and packaging flight food products for ISS and Ground Analog missions, as well as developing food systems for next generation exploration vehicles and habitats.
  • Space Flight Hardware – Performing design, fabrication, testing, and operation of research and medical support hardware and software on the ISS and Artemis.
  • Radiation Risk Mitigation – Developing the next generation of radiation detection, shielding, modeling, and risk assessments for ISS, Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD), and Artemis to assess, inform and mitigate crew risks associated with space radiation
  • Research Operations and Integration – Enabling human research operations, training, and integration in space and earth-based analogs. Leidos has supported over 22,000 hours of testing for 80+ completed and 21 ongoing experiments on 73 International Space Station Increments and 9 ground analog campaigns.
  • Human Factors & Behavioral Performance – Providing human factors expertise and research support in the areas of suit design, vehicle outfitting, spacecraft lighting, and payload human factors, as well as development of NASA standards for Artemis and CLD.
