Meet a Leidos Summer Intern: Alec Marshall

Meet Alec Marshall, a Leidos Energy Advising Intern. Originally from the Midwest, Alec is spending the summer in Massachusetts while interning at the company. With his enthusiasm for learning and fresh perspective, Leidos is looking forward to the positive impact he’ll make during his time here.

Check out what Alec has to say about his summer internship experience so far.

Where do you go to school, what are you majoring in and when do you graduate?

I go to the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I’m studying mechanical engineering, and I graduate next semester (Fall 2025). After that, I will be pursuing a master’s degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics and electric machine (motor) design.

You're a Leidos summer intern. Are you doing this in person, hybrid or virtually?

I’m virtual, but I moved to Boston for the duration of the internship to occasionally do site visits with my team.

Tell us about your internship experience so far.

My experience with Leidos as an intern this summer has been great! I’ve really enjoyed learning about energy advising from professionals in the field, and it’s been super rewarding to bring my own skills to the team (like programming) to help build tools that let us do things beyond what we were capable of before. Getting to visit industrial sites and see how their systems work has been fun as well. The first place I visited had an on-site hydroelectric turbine generator. Getting to see things like this during site visits is rare, and I’m happy I got the chance to be part of it!

What made you decide to apply for a Leidos internship?

I heard about Leidos through a family friend, and I’d always wanted to do an internship on the East Coast. One of the major reasons I decided to apply for my role as an energy advisor intern was because I felt it could make positive change in the world. We are responsible for determining how energy use can be reduced at every step of different processes, which is a critical task as we only continue to consume more power each year.

How will a Leidos internship help you meet your academic and career goals?

Academically, I’ve been pursuing a certificate in Engineering for Energy Sustainability for the past three years, this internship has solidified many of the important concepts I took away from my classes at school. Career-wise, I am incredibly proud to be a part of the Leidos team, and I look forward to continuing my career full-time with the company someday. I think one of my favorite aspects of Leidos is the freedom to try different things within the company and find the place that you fit in best.

Besides the internship, what else are you up to this summer?

Since it’s my first time living in Boston, I’ve been exploring the city regularly after work to make the most of my time out here! I have really enjoyed biking and taking photos. Also, there have been regular intern and recent graduate meetups, so I have been meeting a lot of new people.

When I’m not spending time outside or with friends, I’m doing engineering projects on the side as well. My two main projects are a fully custom three-phase inverter for precise and silent motor control, and a system for my desk and wall that tracks the trains nearby so I always know when I can head out. I’m planning to turn the train tracking device into a product sometime soon after receiving a large amount of interest from the Boston community.

What is your favorite food?

Favorite food is a hard choice for me (too many good options)! A current favorite spot of mine is Banh Mi Huong Que which serves very affordable but delicious Vietnamese bánh mì sandwiches in the heart of downtown Boston.

At Leidos, whether you join for a summer internship or sign on as a co-op during the academic year, you will have the unique opportunity to work directly with a team on critical projects, either at a Leidos facility or on a customer site. View our current internship opportunities and apply today to join the Leidos family!
