Mission Planning System (MPS)

Leidos MPS consists of a full line of sophisticated and yet simple to use computerized aircraft mission planning systems available for aircraft around the world.

The Leidos Mission Planning System (MPS) is a sophisticated yet simple-to-use computerized aircraft mission planning system. It provides pilots, mission planners, and evaluators with preflight rehearsal and analysis information for aircraft around the world. Memory Unit Tactical Air Crew Training System (MUTACTS), a companion product for post-flight analysis, is also available.


MPS allows aircrews to quickly plan, analyze, re-plan and rehearse missions using digital maps, imagery, and elevation data. All information can then be loaded on data transfer devices for downloading to the aircraft avionics suite. No additional data input is necessary in the cockpit, thus enhancing rapid response and eliminating the possibility of error.

Each user interface is simple to learn and easy to operate because the system is modeled and organized to follow a pilot's mission planning workflow. MPS is based on exportable map database technology and is available as commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products or can be configured to meet the specific needs of each individual customer. The Leidos MPS has been delivered to several domestic and international customers operating a wide array of rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft.

When integrated with RADSIM, our precision radar simulation capability, the MPS provides a total mission planning package.

  • Planning outputs include strip maps and kneeboard cards.
  • Seamless map database contains raster maps, satellite imagery, reconnaissance photos, digital terrain elevation data (DTED), and vector data.
  • Calculates the necessary flight parameters, including weaponeering, threat analysis, and the effects of weapons load on weight and drag (standard Form F for U.S. aircraft.)


MPS provides sophisticated tactical decision aids for fighters, bombers, transport, and rotary-wing aircraft. More than 2,500 mission planning systems have been delivered for use by military aircraft in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Switzerland, Finland, Malaysia, Italy, Argentina, and Spain. MPS can run on COTS hardware including laptop computers, and the software is exportable.


A Map Station allows a user definable electronic map database. It supports common map types such as ADRG, TIFF, CAC, Intergraph, and CRP. For areas of the world without electronic map data, the Map Station can process paper charts seamlessly into the existing map database. Multi datum support includes the earth centered WGS-84 and WGS-72 models. Maps can be further annotated with an overlay editor where overlays can be embedded into the map for subsequent use by the MPS or in the cockpit.

Can the system be modified to accommodate new airframes?

Yes. Leidos can adapt the MPS technology based on customer criteria. Leidos has made adaptations for both US and foreign aircraft.

In addition to fixed-wing aircraft, are rotary-wing aircraft supported?

Yes. MPS supports the mission planning needs for several helicopters including the MH-60 BLACK HAWK, EH-101, WAH-64 APACHE, MH-53 SEA DRAGON, AH-1 COBRA, UH-1 HUEY, CH-47 CHINOOK, and AH-64 APACHE.

What types of missions are supported?

MPS supports various roles including transport and tactical missions, weapons delivery, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, minesweeping missions, etc.

What type of electronic map data is supported?

CADRG (Compressed ARC Digitized Raster Graphics), CIB (Controlled Image Base), GeoTIFF (Georeferenced Tagged Image File Format), and DTED (Digital Terrain Elevation Data) for use in mission planning and debriefing.
